U7 : vs Old Richians (H) Bredon 1 - 2 Old Richians Sun 18-Apr-2010 |
|
|
On a fine sunny morning the Under 7’s played their last match of the season against a strong and disciplined Old Richians side. Due to the number of players available and their willingness to play as many games as possible, three games were played of 10 minutes each way. In the first game Old Richians opened the scoring with Bredon equalising almost straight away through a long solo run by William Pearce. Further tries from Joel Vanghi, Josh Martin, Harry Cox and William Pearce resulted in a final score of Bredon 5 – Old Richians 7. In the second game following a number of substitutions, both sides were again well matched and Bredon displayed all the passing and tagging skills they have learnt during the season. Old Richians displayed a better understanding of positional play and by using the full width of the pitch managed to break through the Bredon defence to score some fine tries. Despite excellent tagging by Bredon, Old Richians won this game 6 – 4. The third game was a great way to end the season for Bredon with some great passing and support play and a lot of open running. Bredon romped home to a fine win with three great individual tries from Harry Cox and a fine solo try from Josh Martin. Final score Bredon 4 - Old Richians 1.

V Old Richians 18/04/10
The final match of the season took place on a beautifully warm spring day against Old Richians, who were new opponents for the U11’s. The fine weather meant the ground was pretty firm and encouraged the boys to play open running rugby. The match was played over three fifteen minute periods to allow both teams to fully involve their squads. Bredon opened strongly and opened up a four try cushion before Old Richians replied with a couple of tries of their own. With plenty of player rotations Bredon ran out easy winners, but special mention to Shea Danter for his outstanding attacking play and the forwards, whose scrummaging was amongst their best this season – great body positions and powerful driving kept Old Richians on the back foot. With a final score of 8-3 to Bredon, it was a great way to end the season

Well, what a great game ! Last game of the season and we hosted a very competitive Old Richians squad in 2 matches. The First of which proved to be a very bruising affair with Bredon controlling the Forward play to release the backs, and especially Edward Petts, for some splendid scores. However the linesmen was overly vigilant in disallowing 2 scores. The Forwards power was unstoppable with Ben Phillips scoring from close range. But Man of the Match must go to Edward for his free running in space to score some great points. This result was the culmination of a number of weeks of hard training and the whole squad really delivered on all of their hard work. the team played with real purpose and their constant pressure was testament to their win to win.Congratulation to all who took part this performance bodes well for next year.

Gullivers U11 Nottingham Festival 2nd – 4th April 2010
Following a season disrupted so often by the weather, it was a pleasant change for the Bredon U11 squad to play under blue skies as they made their inaugural visit to the Gullivers National Rugby competition in Nottingham over the Easter weekend. With the tournament running over two days the boys faced three matches on the Saturday, opening with a game against Amersham & Chiltern. Despite playing one of the strongest teams in the group, the boys only lost 10-5 to a last minute try following some scrappy defence. Scoreless draws followed against Spalding and Sheffield, both with much larger squads than Bredon, and with the rub of the green we could have easily won both these matches Sunday saw us face Old Northamptonians in our first match, a team with some huge players, and despite the best efforts and some great tackling we lost 15-5. The second match against Diss was probably our most disappointing performance. The effort of the previous match seemed to have sapped our energy, particularly of the pack, and we ended up with a 5-5 draw against a team we could have easily beaten on another day. The final pool match against Wallingford was irrelevant in terms of final positioning as we were already through to the bowl semi-final, and with several players rested, Wallingford ran out 15-0 winners. With the prize of a place in the final at Twickenham for the winners, Bredon took on Bishops Stortford in the last match of the tour. Bredon started brightly but as the first half progressed Bishops Stortford began to dominate, and with two unanswered tries in the first half, ran out deserved winners. So although the results on the pitch were not as good as we hoped, it was a great experience to pitch ourselves against much bigger clubs, both in terms of squad size and in many cases player size, and the boys were a great credit to the club both on and off the field. The organisation of the coaches and many of the parents made for a fantastically enjoyable tour for the boys, and the memories and friendships made will stay with them for years to come. Well done lads!

It must have been the warm sunshine that brought out a larger than usual Bredon U7’s squad of 11 players to play against Malvern U7’s. The sides were evenly matched from start to finish with all players on both sides tagging well and making good use of the ball when in possession. With rolling subs, all players played and competed well in a very entertaining match. The first game which comprised two halves of ten minutes saw both sides score 11 tries each and it was clear that all the boys were enjoying the game so much that a further two halves of 5 minutes each were played. After the extra time played, both sides had scored a further 4 tries each, resulting in a final overall score of Bredon 15 – Malvern 15. This was a great game to watch and it was good to see and hear so many enthusiastic spectators on the touchline encouraging the young players. Tries: Josh 6, William P 5, Harry C 2, Joel 1, Louis 1

|
What a lovely Sunday Morning, good weather (for a change) good opposition and good rugger. Well the squad has come on leaps and bounds in the last month and are putting in some great team performances. After some tough games it was good to show our depth of character and get some reward for all of the effort.
The first game saw Stow take on Bredon and this was a battle of two styles. Bredon with a strong driving maul and rucking game pitched against the smart , fast backs of the home side. The games ebbed and flowed and it was Bredon who came out on top with a great allround performance with tries from Edward, Harry and and George. Final score 5-3
The Fairford match was a stronger test with the green and blacks proving a well drilled unit. Battle though they did it was the sheer power of the back line that saw the vital tries being scored, to eventually run out 5-3 to Fairford. This was a truly great performance despite the scoreline. The squad played as a true unit and showed commitment and a depth of spirit that is now back and burning bright.
Keep up the good work boys.

U11 : vs LandRover Tournament (A) LandRover Tournament Sun 21-Mar-2010 |
|
|
For once the weather at Cheltenham was almost springlike as the boys opened their pool matches against Long Levens with a relatively straight forward win although we were a little sluggish out of the blocks. Although the forwards were up against a larger pack they won enough ball to allow the backs to run in three tries. Joss Edwards and Kieran Brooks both broke through to score and although Long Levens pulled one back, Joss took a quick penalty and sprinted clear to touch down in the corner and cement the win. The second match against Chosen Hill was a harder encounter. Bredon again opened the scoring via Joss, but the opposition applied good pressure for most of the second half and scored a well deserved equalising try. This meant that the boys needed to win their final pool match convincingly to ensure progress to the semi-finals. With the potential of not qualifying the boys produced their best display of the morning against Nailsea & Backwell and, with the pack putting in an excellent performance, they ran out easy winners by four tries to nil The semi-final opponents were Stroud and they took an early lead but Joss Edwards touched down in the corner to equalise before half time. The second half saw the boys start to dominate and a quick tap by Lewis McConnell to himself saw him crash over to give Bredon the lead. A further try by Bredon gave them a cushion and despite a late consolation try for Stroud the boys had booked themselves a place in the final! Our opponents in the final, Hucclecote, had played a game less due to a bye in their pool and it showed as our boys tired against a solid well drilled team. Despite the best efforts we played most of the game defending our line and a final score of 3-0 to Hucclecote was a fair result. Nonetheless it was a great achievement to reach the final particularly against teams with much larger squads on the day, and the experience will serve us well for the Nottingham Festival in a couple of weeks time

U7 : vs Droitwich Festival (A) Droitwich Festival 3 - 2 Bredon Sun 21-Mar-2010 |
|
|
This week the U7’s travelled to Droitwich to take part in the Droitwich Festival. Six teams competed in the tournament which was a very friendly affair with all teams playing each other once for fun but the competition to win each game was fierce.
The U7’s first game was against Upton, a side we missed playing earlier in the season due to bad weather. Bredon took an early lead in the first half and held on to it with a fine display of defensive tagging and accurate passing. Upton defended well but in the end could not match Bredon for pace when running for the line. Final score: Bredon 6 Upton 3 Tries: William P 3, Josh 2, Jamie 1 The second game was against Bromsgrove who beat us at home earlier in the season. This time, the side displayed all the tagging and ball handling skills they have practised over the past months resulting in a very closely fought contest. Both sides scored alternate tries at each end. With the score level at 5 – 5 and with only seconds to play Bromsgrove touched down to score the winning try as the final whistle blew. Final score: Bredon 5 Bromsgrove 6 Tries: William P 2, Jamie 2, Josh 1
Our third game was against Droitwich Bees, one of two Droitwich sides entered in the tournament. This time our opponents were much stronger and displayed good technique and very strong running. Despite consistently good tagging, Droitwich Bees won this game. Final score: Bredon 2 Droitwich Bees 7 Tries: Stanley 1, Josh 1
Our fourth game matched us up against Evesham. Bredon took an early lead in this match and displayed a determination to win against a side which beat them at home earlier in the season. After the earlier defeat by Droitwich, Bredon came out strongly and scored two early tries which seemed to rattle the opposition. In the second half Evesham came back strongly but could not match Bredon who were the stronger side on the day. Final score: Bredon 7 Evesham 4 Tries: Josh 3, William P 3, Stanley 1
Our final game was against Droitwich Wasps who like the Droitwich Bees were well drilled and difficult opponents. Bredon played well showing great character and commitment but with tired legs our players were unable to contain Droitwich who had a large squad and used substitutes effectively. Droitwich scored seven tries and despite tired legs Bredon ran in four tries before the final whistle. Final score: Bredon 4 Droitwich Wasps 7 Tries: William P 3, Josh 1
The day was enjoyed by all. The sun shone and the team played some excellent Rugby against strong opposition. Well done to all the players.

U12 : vs LandRover Tournament (A) 3 from 3 in group rounds Sun 21-Mar-2010 |
|
|
Bredon travelled to Cheltenham this week for the eagerly anticipated Land Rover tournament. Coming off the back of a disappointing showing against Malvern the week before, and with a couple of noticable absentees, the team was looking for a big performance to regain some pride. The squad was pleased to welcome 2 new additions to their ranks; Kav Jason-Ryan and Ryan Taylor.
The group stages comprised 3 matches, the winners progressing to the knock out stages of the competition. Bredon faced Chippping Sodbury first. The match was a very even affair for the opening 5 minutes. Both teams were quick out of the blocks and keen to play open, running rugby. Quick handling from the Bredon backs was good to see with some direct, fast paced running. However, it was Bredon who were winning the battle up front. Their powerful scrum was firing from the whistle. The lineout was also much improved. As the half drew to a close, hooker for the day Dom Heeks scored the games opening try. The second half was very much a repeat of the first. Both sides were extremely competitive. Once again Bredons' pack had the slight upper hand and a solid scrum allowed centre Kyle Webb the chance to score the games second try. However, last ditch defending from Sodbury meant the ball was held up over the line. The resulting scrum was again solid and scrum-half Jake Carrolan scored in the corner from a great blind side run. Final score 2-0 Bredon.
In their second match, Bredon faced Chosen Hill. Bredon were in the ascendency from the start. Ollie Goodwin was first to score, quickly followed by George Barrel. Bredons' forwards provided a constant supply of ball to the backs through a mixture of fierce open play and set piece work. Kyle Webb ran in Bredons' third try before the interval. The forwards were keen to cash in on their hard work in the second half, with prop Toby Marshall scoring and Dom Heeks getting his second of the tournament. Bredons' final try was scored by debutant Kav Jason-Ryan, with a lovely side step to finish off another back move. Chosen Hill, to their credit, never gave up, and kept pushing Bredon throughout the match. They had come close to scoring on a couple of occassions, but were finally rewarded with a try for their efforts with almost the last play of the game. Final score 6-1 Bredon.
And so the final game of the group stages put Bredon up against Dursley. They had also had a good group stage up to that point. The maths were proving too complicated if the match ended in a draw, so Bredon knew that a win guaranteed them a place in the semi-final. Dursley also knew as much and so the game got off to a rather edgy start. Dursley started the stronger with some great handling through their backs, putting Bredon under pressure. Also under pressure was the Bredon scrum. A much bigger Dursley pack was proving more than a match for them on a number of set pieces. However, Bredon showed a spirit in defence that had been lacking in previous games. Their tackling was ferocious and the forwards competed for every scrap of loose ball available. The second debutant, Ryan Taylor, was playing out of his skin. On one occasion, Dursley had a driving maul less than two metres from the Bredon try line. Helped by his team mates, who managed to slow the maul just enough, Taylor managed to rip the ball free from a giant of a Dursley prop, and come away with the ball. A pass to scrum half George Barrel meant the line was cleared and an almost certain try avoided. 0-0 at half time. In the second half, Bredon threw caution to the wind. With some excellent positional kicking from Sam Darcy, they managed to progress their way up into the Dursley 22. There they camped for much of the opening minutes of the second half. In such a tight game, it was clear that it could possibly be decided by just one try. That try was scored by Bredon. With about four minutes of the half remaining, a scrum was won by Bredon. George Barrel picked up from the back of the scrum. He spotted a gap behind the Dursley defence, chipped the ball through, and followed up on his own kick to score a wonderful solo effort. All that remained was for Bredon to hang on to their lead. Dursley threw everything they had at Bredon. At one point it looked as if they may score the equalising try, with Bredon pressing the panic button on their own try line, and nobody seeming to want the ball. However they managed to hang on and progress through to the semi-final
In the semi-final, Bredon faced Stroud. They were a very well drilled side, who brought a pack who knew how to scrummage well and hustle Bredon off the ball. The first half was scoreless until the last minute, when Bredons' stubborn and heroic defence was finally broken. In the second half, Stroud managed to press home their size advantage in the forwards to score two more tries. Final score 3-0 Stroud. However in was a fantastic mornings rugby, and the lads left the park proud of their accomplishments. Man of the match over the four games played was Ryan Taylor, a stunning debut.

U11 : vs Droitwich (H) Bredon 14 - 14 Droitwich Sun 07-Mar-2010 |
|
|
In a fantasic advert for local rugby these two strong teams drew 14 - 14. It was a good all round team performance from Bredon with the forwards competing very well at the breakdown, and the ball being transferred quickly out to the backs. Try scorers were Dylan Moss (who dived over from close range after a break from Fraser Cox) and Alex Watkins , who put in a good leg drive to force his way over after the ball was moved out to the centres from Harry Low, playing at fly half. Both tries were converted by Shea Danter
A second game was played which we lost 7 - 0.The boys tackled and kicked well for position, and had plenty of pressure on the Droitwich line with Droitwich doing well to hold us up. However, it turned into a bit of a forward battle, when the game in a number of situations needed to be played with more width. Well done boys!

The Buzzards travelled to Droitwich for a game re-scheduled from earlier in the year, when the poor weather had meant weeks of cancellations. With a large squad of players to pick from, Droitwich offered 2 games for the price of one.
The first game got off to a nervy start from the Buzzards and the first 7 or 8 minutes found the visitors firmly camped in their own 22. Some poor kicking and lack of adventure meant Bredon failed to capitalise on a very promising start by their forwards, who again showed their scrummage was a serious weapon. Failure to clear the Bredon line inevitably lead to the first try being scored by Droitwich. This galvanised Bredon to focus on the task in hand. From the re-start they were more attack minded. Kicks were more accurate and the forwards provided a solid platform with which the backs could begin to use the full width of the pitch. Bredons' equalising try began just outside their own 22. A scrum was followed up with some crisp passing from the backs. Sam Darcy fed the ball to Jake Carrolan who in turn released winger Tom Kenwright. He then ran 2/3 of the pitch, skipping through 3 tackles to score in the corner for a stunning debut try for the club.
The second half saw Droitwich start the stronger side. Bredon were slower to the breakdown and missed tackles proved costly as Droitwich regained the lead, a try which was duly converted. Again, Bredon got together, talked about what was wrong, and set about making it right. The forwards again mounted a strong charge, with some excellent work from Euan Archer and Jack Dowdeswell. Dom Heeks was proving to be a real handful in open play with a series of charges up the pitch with the ball in hand. The backs were growing in confidence with every phase of play and some direct running and accurate kiccking brought about the equalising try from Kyle Webb. James Newey converted.
The winning try was scored with 3 minutes of the second half remaining. A box kicked clearance from 5 metres in front of the Bredon try line wasn't dealt with well by Droitwich. From the subsequent open play, Sam Darcy popped up with the ball and found himself facing a couple of defenders. They were dealt with by a superb turn of speed. Newey again converted, final score Droitwich 12 - 19 Bredon.
Sadly for Bredon, the depth of the Droitwich squad meant that the second game allowed them to bring on virtually a full replacement team. Oddly, Droitwich had saved many of their better players for the second game. A fresh team faced the Buzzards, with only 3 repacements to use themselves. It meant the second game was a very one sided affair in favour of the home team. The extra speed from fresh legs meant they were simply quicker in many areas of the game. Bredon failed to lift themselves to the higher tempo rugby being played, with many a missed tackle to analyse post game. They were on the receiving end of a very well drilled and clinical Droitwich, who managed to run in 7 tries without reply. The score line didn't do justice to the endeavours of the Buzzards; their work rate and commitment remained high throughout the match. To a man, they continued to attack and try new tactics till the final whistle, showing a real team spirit and desire to work for each other.

What a difference a week makes, having been the victims of something of a Masterclass of Mini Rugby the week before the U10 squad mounted a fantastic display of guts and endevour to overcome a determined Droitwich side. Playing 3 games, the team ran out overall winners 2 games to 1. The first game saw a strong performance from the forwards with a focus on close support play and slight of hand offloads going into contact. This tactic worked well, albeit for a couple of breakaway tries following sustained pressure in the oppositions half. The free scoring games ebbed and flowed with never more than 1 try in it. Sadly for Bredon, Droitwich ran out eventual winners of the first encounter by 5 tries to 4. Game 2 saw a good number of changes in personel with every squad member getting an outing. The game followed a very similar pattern to the first with the added sparkle of some pretty fierce tackling from both sides. This time honours were to the home side with the Buzzards winning 3 tries to 2. The final game - saw some of the players from the first game returning with fresh legs. A more open game followed with Bredon racking up a 2-1 victory. Too many great performances to single out any individual player, but it was gratifying to see such a strong return to fighting form from everybody involved. Well done All !

U7 : vs Silhillians (A) Silhillians 17 - 19 Bredon Sun 28-Feb-2010 |
|
|
Only 6 players managed to make the trip to Silhillians to be confronted upon arrival by an opposition squad in excess of 20. Undaunted, Bredon agreed to play three games of two halves so that most of the opposition would get a game. In the first game Bredon started well and scored an early try after a long darting run by Sam Rowden. Persistent tagging and accurate passing kept the half time score at 3-1 to Silhillians despite a superb acrobatic single handed diving try by William Pearce being disallowed. In the second half William Pearce scored a further 3 tries for Bredon giving a final score of 6-4 to Silhillians. In the second game Bredon were determined to win and did so convincingly with a great display of confident passing and tagging leading to tries from Josh Martin (3), Sam Rowden (2), Harry Roberts-Hill (1) and William Pearce (4). Persistent tagging throughout the game by Jamie Irwin and Joel Vanghi helped the team to a final winning score of Bredon 10 - Silhillians 5. In the third game Bredon continued to put into practise their greatly improved ball skills and despite their tired legs were drawing 4 – 4 at half time with tries from William Pearce (2), Josh Martin (1) and Sam Rowden (1). In the second half William scored a further disallowed try (not grounded with two hands) however he soon scored again to take Bredon ahead. Silhillians scored again to bring the match level. Both sides were now desperate to score the winning try in this game and persistent tagging by both sides kept the score level until Silhillians managed to touch the ball down to score seconds before the final whistle. This was a really gutsy team performance by 6 young players who managed to play three games one after another against a much larger squad and win overall 19-17 on aggregate.

On a cold but dry morning Bredon took on a resilient Silhillians team. With only 12 players available and despite not having played for a couple of weeks the boys started strongly. Good pressure by the forwards meant that most of the first half was played in the opposition's half and a couple of half breaks by the backs nearly resulted in the opening try. Despite reaching half time with the score at 0-0 all the pressure had come from Bredon and so it was no surprise that the first try came early in the second half. Continued forward pressure led to a penalty, the ball was spun out wide and Joss Edwards ran in to score. However as the game progressed Silhillians began to match us up front both in the loose and the set plays and in the final move of the match their forwards drove over to score. With both tries being converted the final score in an exciting game was 7-7

Bredon travelled to Solihull this week to face Old Silhillians for 2 games. Unfortunately, due to illness and various other commitments, only 10 players made the journey up; the coaches would like to express their appreciation to Sil's for the loan of 3 backs for both games.
The first game started at a great pace. Both teams have missed a lot of games through bad weather, and were keen to get stuck in. The forwards were eager to show the extra training sessions had paid off. As usual Bredon's scrum was solid and held its own. However, from the early encounters it was apparent that the rucking and mauling were greatly improved, with Nathan Branchett, Dom Heeks and Jack Dowdeswell fiercely competitive at the breakdown.
It was Silhillians who scored first. With Bredon missing many of their starting backs, gaps were soon exposed and exploited. Sil's scored a second try from a lineout move at the end of the first half; a set piece move proving unstoppable.
In the second half, Bredon's task became harder with Silhillians scoring an early try. However, Bredon's spirit kept them attacking at every oppurtunity. Some ferocious tackling from James Newey kept Sil's on the back foot. Unfortunately the lack of back line experience together began to show as the half progressed. A few missed tackles and a few dropped passes meant a lack of fluent running from the back line. As the forwards tired, gaps began to appear in the defence. Silhillians were able to throw the ball wide and managed to run in 4 more tries by the end of the game. Final score Silhillians 49-0 Bredon.
The second game saw Bredon keen to show the score line in the first game in no way reflected the lack of talent or commitment on display. From the outset, Bredon raised their game to another level. Bredon were quicker to the breakdown, more competitive in open play, and hustled Silhillians for every loose ball. The scrum began to win every put in, with Euan Archer leading the pack superbly. Bredon's first try came from a good solid platform created by the pack. The backs handling was starting to come together. A fine run by Ollie Goodwin was well rewarded with a try which James Newey converted. This was the catalyst the Buzzards needed to grow in confidence. With each phase, the forwards beacme more fluent. Big hits from Dom Heeks and Toby Marshall created the breakdown. Euan Archer was there to power over the ruck, Nathan Branchett was on his shoulder to pick and drive on again or release to the backs via scrum half Jake Carrolan. Silhillians were on the back foot and another solid Bredon scrum allowed James Newey to score a second try, with another fine solo run. Newey again converted. Silhillians scored from the restart to remind Bredon they were still in with a tough second half.
The second half saw Bredon capitalise on their forward dominance. James Newey and Ollie Goodwin both managed to score another try each to increase Bredon's lead. The final try of the game was scored by a Silhillians replacment. James Newey, on course for a hat-trick in the corner, un-selfishly passed to the young on-loan winger, allowing him a simple run in; he then allowed the player to convert his on try. Silhilians managed to score a second try in the last move of the game, final score Silhillians 14-35 Bredon.

The long trip to Solihull was blessed by a really strong turnout. Silhilians fielded a very competative team, well drilled and full of pace. The team responded spendidly, to the initial fierce onslaught by Sils and went in at half time 3 tries to 2 in arrears. Very spirited displays of driving mauls and strong back tackling being the order of the day. The second period proved less succesful for our team as the Home side began to gain control. Despite a valiant effort and all of our attacks being repelled, the final score read 6 tries to 2. A fair reflecton of the game, and the strength of Sils, but our team can be justifyably proud of their effort with some stand out perforamces from Gregor, Harry M, Oliver and Edward. Well done everybody, another committed performance.

U7 : vs Worcester (A) Worcester 9 - 3 Bredon Sun 07-Feb-2010 |

|
It was a good turn out of 10 players for Bredon on this overcast morning. Worcester ran in a long range try from their first play. Bredon responded well with some good handling and a phase of fumbles from both sides which led to William Pearce picking up 10 metres from Bredons line to run the length of the pitch for their first try. Worcester ran in two more tries in the first half with Bredon unlucky not to score from a fine solo run from Joshua Martin who was brought up just short of the line. The second half saw Worcester score an early try with an immediate response from Bredon scored by Sam Rowden after a great individual run, picking his way through the opposition to touch down in the corner. Joshua was again unlucky being stopped just short of the try line after a good solo effort. Worcester scored again and in response Bredon had a sustained spell of possession with all members of the team being involved in a move which led to William Pearce going over from 5 metres out for Bredons 3rd try. Despite the scoreline, it was a good team performance showing real improvement in team play, handling skills and tagging.
Following the main match a friendly was played involving all 10 players with deserved tries for Freya Peterson and Joshua Martin.

After a long period of weather-enforced inactivity it was a bonus for the boys to be playing not only Worcester, but also a touring team from Chew Valley. The first match of the triangular competition saw us watch Worcester beat the tourists before facing the home team in the next match. Worcester are always strong opposition and despite a lack of recent matches the boys started solidly. In the muddy conditions good forward pressure by Bredon saw the ball moved out to Kieran Brooks who sprinted clear to touch down in the corner and score the only try of the half. Shortly after the restart Joss Edwards collected the ball on the half way line, skillfully chipped over the defence and caught the ball to score under the posts to give a deserved final score of 14-0. The second match against Chew Valley was an exciting game with Bredon dominating early on before the tourists rallied strongly. An early penalty following a good break by Fraser Cox saw Matthew Dickens go over. However a penalty for offside was then advanced 10m by the referee for indiscipline which gave the Chew Valley forwards the opportunity to equalise. Bredon quickly hit back with a second try as the ball was moved slickly down the back line for Kieran to grab his second try of the day as he finished the move off well in the corner. A third try followed before half time as Shea Danter made a great interception and ran in from his own half. The second half was a different story as Chew Valley started to dominate both in the scrum and at the breakdown. They scored two tries before Dylan Moss showed his strength to widen the scoreline but a final breakout and try from the Bristol boys gave them their fourth try of the match, with only a missed conversion giving us a narrow 28-26 win. There are still some areas to be worked on, particularly at the breakdown, but with so little rugby having been played the boys can be very pleased with an excellent morning's work

After so many weeks of adverse weather and cancelled matches, it was great to get back to the rough and tumble of the rugger season. As you might expect Worcester were very strong and with a squad of 40+ had plenty of talent to choose from. This was going to be a tough pair of matches. A good turn out saw our lads take on Worcesters' "Tournament Team" and Bredon were put under pressure right from the start. Our lads were in for a lot of tackling, and they stuck to their task with a fervour, their never say die spirit was tested severly, and after a real struggle the match went to half time with the Hosts' 3 tries to the good. There were many positives to take from the display, the performance of the forwards was particularly notable. Fired up for the 2nd half Bredon upped their performance and began to control a large part of the possession and territory. Some really great attacking work with good close handling and more pressure from the front row eventually gave its just rewards, with a great push over team try scored by at least 3 if not more of the team at once. All of the boys played with real spirit and despite letting in 2 further tries, the team, captained by Ben Phillips can be fully happy with their efforts.
Game 2
Bredon 20 - 10 Worcester
Bredon carried on from where they left off in the 1st match with a very positive display of controlled power rugby. Playing a mainly 5 man game of rolling maul and strong rucking Bredon took full control . The hard work of the training field paid off as the team were in no mood to quit, so many players should get a mention, the forwards Charlie ,Harry, Ben (2 tries) and half backs, Ollie and Zane, backs Edward, George, Seb, Harry (2 tries) , Jonty, Callum and Harry, this was a fearsome performance, well executed and a true credit to everyone involved.

Bredon travelled to sixways this week to take on Worcester in a keenly anticipated fixture. Bredon hadn't played this year, the weather forcing several cancellations, and the lads were itching to get stuck into a match. Joining the Buzzards this season are Matt Hamilton, Nick Miners, Harry Jones and George Creese, adding depth to the squad.
From the kick off, both teams were keen to get on with the game. The early exchanges were physical with honours even. Worcester had a size advantage in the forwards, but Bredon's pack was keen to put into practice some of the hard work from the training field, following a couple of poor results. They were keen to contest the rucks, and mauled with great determination. The scrum has been one of Bredons best attacking weapons of late, and today was no exception. Some good work by hooker Euan Archer meant some scrums against the head gave Bredon the early advantage. Pressure began to build against Worcester and the deadlock was broken after 10 minutes. Number 8 James Newey made a superb break and finished well to open the scoring with a fine solo try. Newey converted.
Bredon very nealy scored from the restart. The kick was collected by prop, Dom Heeks, who went on a charging run straight down the pitch back at the home side. It looked like he was held up in the tackling players; but his team was on hand to drive the maul on. Dom emerged from the maul, still charging to the line. He was finally brought down but scrum half Jake Carrolan was on hand to keep the ball alive. Quick hands from fly half Sam Darcy allowed winger Tom Kenwright to go for a try in the corner. However some desperate defence from Worcester drove him into touch inches from a debut try. Bredon took great heart from this play. Growing in confidence, they kept attacking Worcester's line. Successive scrums kept the pressure on. Eventually the ball broke loose and centre George Barrel was on hand to pounce on the ball and score Bredon's second try.
The second half saw Worcester mount a much stronger challenge to the Bredon line. The first five minutes saw the home side pressing hard for a score. However some ferocious tackling kept them at bay. As a unit, the forwards were much quicker to the breakdown than in previous matches, all of them aquitted themselves admirably to the defensive duties. The line held firm. As the Worcester pack began to tire, Bredon began to string the ball wide along the back line. Good runs from Ollie Goodwin and Dan Robertshaw showed signs of promise, only to be thwarted by last minute tackles or the odd knock-on. Some very clever positional kicking from George Barrel kept Worcester on the back foot. Eventually Bredon scored again, James Newey on hand to finish off another passage of play that saw Bredon utilise the full width of the pitch. The try was converted by Barrel.
Worcester scored a late try to salvage something from the game; a well worked passage of play resulting in a try in the corner, which was converted. However it was Bredon who finished the game as strongly as they had started it, a fine return to form.

A week on from the excitement of the Cirencester Match there was no let up in the effort. Another great turn out, albeit with some notable players missing, saw the Team control both the possession and the overall shape of the game.
An early breaktrough saw Edward Petts score a splendid individual try, and further pressure allowed Bob Tharme to cross for a real forwards try. The final score of the half went to Harry Winnard with a typical short range effort. So 15 - nil at the half and Bredon were in no mood to take their foot off the Gas.
After the restart, it took a little time to regain our momentum, but thanks again to a long range effort by Edward Petts the pattern of the first half was regained. Great forward power in the rucks and superb close handling kept the pressure on. The team gained their just rewards with 2 further tries from Harry Winnard.
Overall this was a much improved performance with the team showing real discipline in form and some super individual efforts. Great Captains role from Edward and Man of the match - Harry Winnard.
Well done everybody, a fantastic performance.

|
Bredon welcomed Painswick to Westmancote this weekend, keen for a re-match following an earlier defeat at the Cheltenham festival.
The game, played as 3 x 15 minute periods, started well for Bredon. They were quickly into their stride and attacking the Painswick defence. The forwards were showing great enterprise in their endeavours to win the rucks and mauls, and presented quick ball to the backs. They, in return were keen to follow on from their good performances the week before. Sam Darcey and James Newey were linking well again, with a returning Ollie Goodwin showing some real pace joining in from full back. Their early pressure was rewarded with a penalty 5 metres out. The resulting set piece was finished with a try by James Newey, lifting spirits throughout the team. Sadly, this was short lived. Bredon were caught napping at the re-start. They failed to deal properly with the kick off, allowing Painswick a simple try to level immediately. A couple of minutes from the end of the period, Painswick scored again after some strong defending was finally breached.
The second period started as an even encounter. Both sets of forwards were competing well for the ball and some big tackles were being made from both sides. However, a penalty from a Bredon tackle was deemed too high by the referee. This allowed Painswick to score and take the lead. Bredon struggled to get back into the game from this. The forwards were failing to keep a well drilled Painswick pack at bay in open play, being out rucked and mauled. The set pieces were a different affair. Bredon's scrum was once again proving to be the dominant weapon, winning all but one of the scrums awarded. The same was true of the lineout. However, at the end of the second period, Painswick scored again from a set piece move.
The final period saw a more determined Bredon take to the field. They were more competitive and aggressive at the break down. They tackled hard and pressed for a try to bring them back into the match. Their efforts were rewarded. A driving maul close to the Painswick line allowed Nathan Branchett to drive over the line. Despite being forced towards touch, he was strong enough to force the ball over the line. Bredon pressed for another quick try. The backs ran well with great pace and purpose. Sadly the final pass was too late or knocked on, frustrating the team. Efforts were taking their toll on both sides and as Bredon started to run out of steam, they ran out of ideas. Painswick were strong enough to hold off Bredon's attacks and even managed to launch a strong offensive towards the end of the game to score their 5th try.

Despite cold and muddy conditions, Bredon started this match with great commitment and the forwards quickly established their dominance. Despite Painswick’s best efforts Bredon soon converted their possession into points, with the backs making the most of the good ball provided by the forwards. By half time tries by Kieran Brookes (x3), Shea Danter and Will Lloyd saw Bredon in a comfortable position. Although the fluency of the first half was lost slightly as players tried to go themselves rather than continuing the good passing of the first half, the boys were still too strong and committed for Painswick. A second try for Will Lloyd was further added to by Matthew Dickens and Joss Edwards and with all conversions successfully kicked the final score was 56-0 Well played boys and enjoy the Christmas break!!

Bredon started the game well looking to exploit their growing confidence. Following a darting diagonal run William Pearce put the ball down in the corner to open the scoring for Bredon. Painswick came back almost immediately to level the score but only after some good tagging by Bredon. William Pearce went on to score a further two tries during the first half to record his first hat trick of the season. Harry Cox scored the fourth Bredon try of the first half after a determined run, weaving his way through the opposition and scrambling over the line to touch down. At half time the score was Bredon 4 Painswick 4.
In the second half both sides played well with further tries from William Pearce and Joel Vanghi. With the score at six all Stanley Simpson showed his pace to score a fine try after running the full length of the pitch. A few minutes later Stanley scored again after completely outpacing the opposition to touch down in the corner.
Painswick tried hard to force a draw but Bredon defended magnificently to ensure their second win of the season. This was a great team performance and all the players deserve to be congratulated.

The long trip to Cirencester was well supported and we would not be disappointed with a couple of truly exciting games. Despite having the edge in possession, Bredon could not turn this into points during the first match. 3 tries to nil down at half time the second half took on much the same pattern as the first. Some strong and consistant tackling showed little for the effort and this endevour was finally rewarded with a try by Edward Petts.
The squad had suffered a series of defeats over the last 3 games and it looked as though another poor result was to be anticipated. But the team had other ideas, They showed immense character in not only holding the Hosts' level at half time with tries from Harry Winnard and Edward Petts but really controlling the territory and possession. Better was to come in the second half, with the guys taking a strong grip on procedings. They played with real purpose and shape. Tackling was superb and the team performance was nearly dominant. 2 great tries from Harry Mattock and again Edward Petts saw Bredon run out deserved and clear winners. Strong performances from Gregor Johnston, Oli Hall and Edward Petts formed the basis of this well won victory but Man of the Match has to be Harry Mattock.

On a very heavy pitch the U7's began well with Cirencester defending from the start. The players all displayed greatly improved passing and tagging skills resulting in a half time score of Cirencester 4 Bredon 3 with two tries from Harry Cox and a single try from Joel Vanghi.
In the second half Cirencester were able to bring on substitutes and their fresh legs resulted in a further 4 tries. Confusion throughout the whole game over the exact position of the try lines resulted in missed scoring opportunities for Bredon however a further second half try was scored by Joel Vanghi after Harry Cox had run round the opposition to take the ball over the line, finally passing to Joel who was able to touch the ball down.
All the team must be congratulated for playing well in difficult conditions.

Cirencester 0 v 0 Bredon
Drybrook 0 v 5 Bredon
Bredon travelled to Cirencester this weekend to play 2 games, Cirencester and another visiting team, Drybrook. Upon arrival Bredon were short with only 12 players so our thanks to the coaches from both teams for providing a neutral player for both games.
First up, Bredon took on Cirencester on a pitch that was heavy under foot. The game started well for Bredon with the early exchanges going well and a lot of ball coming to the Bredon back line. In previous matches the backs had been criticised by the coaches for not passing the ball when the oppurtunity arose. From the outset, they were keen to prove they were capable of this and straight away were breaking through and looking dangerous. The first half then settled into a battle of forward power. Bredon's forwards were working well as a unit. The lineout was effective and the scrummage was holding its own against a bigger pack. Despite a couple of close breaks, neither side managed to score.
In the second half the game followed a very familiar pattern. As the half progressed, however, Bredon began to look stronger and the more dominant team, hustling for every loose ball, with scrum half and captain Jake Carrolan feeding the backs with some quick and consistent ball. On several occassions Bredons attacking line was close to scoring with both wingers, Tom Kenwright and Kyle Webb both with scoring chances, only to be tackled into touch. Bredon managed to cross the line towards the end of the second half, Nathan Branchett thinking he scored, only for play to be pulled back for a knock on. The game finished scoreless, but it was Bredon who left the match disappointed.
Bredon's second game was against Drybrook, who beat Cirencester 15-0. The second game was a much more physical encounter. Drybrook are a very well drill squad and they played quick rugby. To their credit, it took Bredon most of the first half to get a foot hold in the game. Bredon were forced to put in some big tackles, noteably Dom Heeks, Tob Marshall and Tom Kenwright. As Bredon clawed their way into the match, the back line bagen to get some quick ball. Sam Darcey and James Newey were in excellent form, handling the ball with skill and bringing some real pace into the attacks. Dan Robertshaw was also keen to get into the action, with a great couple of powerful runs.
The second half was a very close affair. Both packs were getting increasingly physical and more ferocious with their tackling. Bredon's scrum was poving to be the difference between the teams. In the first half, Bredon prop, Jack Dowdeswell was penalised for not binding properly. In the second half, with the binding rectified, the scrum was rampant, against a much heavier pack. Bredon began to press this advantage and slowly drove their way up the field, the whole team working well with several phases of quick, direct, running rugby. Drybrook were eventually penalised for diving over in the ruck. From this penalty, a training ground set piece saw the Bredon pack create a dummy run, catching Drybrook off guard, leaving James Newey to exploit the gaps created and score. Bredon then had 5 minutes left to hang on and not concede, which they didn't, and come away with a well earned victory.
Man of the match Sam Darcey.

U11 : vs Bromyard (A) Bromyard 0 - 42 Bredon Sun 22-Nov-2009 |
|
|
On a wet and blustery morning Bredon started strongly against Bromyard and from the outset the boys rucked well. With the backs getting the ball out quickly it was Bredon who dominated the early phases of the game and looked the more likely to score. This early pressure soon told and after three minutes the forwards drove Bromyard backwards and Jules Hobbs went over to open the Bredon scoring. Despite the slippery conditions the boys put together some excellent patterns of play and a second try came as Tom Hughes snaffled a loose ball from the lineout, Lewis McConnell drove at the defence, and Will Lloyd smuggled the ball clear to score his first of the game. He quickly followed up with his second as he supported a blind side snipe by Kieran Brookes and Joss Edwards then followed up his own kick to add a fourth after half time. A break by Joss from half way was then well supported by Tom Hughes who kept the ball alive and Will Baradell Black showed great alertness to gather the loose ball and score in the corner.
With the boys continuing to put together excellent passages of play, recycling the ball and keep the phases going, there were always going to be more tries for the taking and man of the match Will Lloyd got his hatrick as he went over after yet more great work by the pack.
With all the tries being converted the boys ran out winners 42-0.

U7 : vs Bromyard (A) Bromyard 4 - 5 Bredon Sun 22-Nov-2009 |
|
|
On a damp blustery morning Bredon started well by defending strongly against a persistent Bromyard attack. All players tagged well and made good use of the ball when in possession. Bromyard scored first and shortly afterwards Bredon levelled the score with a fine solo try by Harry Cox. Just before half time Bromyard scored a second try to bring the half time score to Bredon 1 - Bromyard 2.
A stern team talk from coach Johnny McGrath at half time encouraged the players to defend the full width of the pitch, to keep on running until tagged and then pass more carefully without giving the ball away. These tactics plus the players' determination to win led to two further tries by William Pearce who made many penetrating runs during the game and a try by Joel Vanghi who ran straight through the defense to touch down. Bromyard scored a further two tries in the second half to leave the score at 4 - 4 with only minutes to play. Both sides ran and passed well in an attempt to score the winning try and with only a minute to go, with Bredon pressing hard towards the Bromyard line, Ryan McGowan ran round the Bromyard defence to score the winning try and his first try of the season.
Well done to all the U7's. This was a great competitive team performance and a well deserved win. Also many thanks to all the parents who braved the elements to loudly cheer and encourage the players.

U10 : vs Bromyard (A) Bromyard 40 - 10 Bredon Sun 22-Nov-2009 |

|
This Match saw the welcome return of the squad members who had been laid low during last weeks' match, and so a near full strengh squad enjoyed four 10 minute session in this keenly contested and sometimes bruising encounter. The First session was very even with lots of gain line encounters, the play ebbed and flowed with neither side putting their stamp on it. 10 points down at the end of the first period Bredon chose to ring the changes with all of the squad members getting a chance to shine.
The tenacity of the Bromyard team coupled with some slick handling finally broke the defence with the home side running in 3 quick tries in succession without reply. More endevour and some inspired play by Will Sharpe and Edward Petts in the third peiod kept the damage to a minimum.
However, the final period saw a return to the starting line up and a very frought battle ensued. Harry Winnard scored after a great forward surge with both Zane Careless, playing out of position at prop, and Ben Phillips influential in the move. This was countered quickly from the restart with the Bromyard wingers showing their pace. As the match drew to a conclusion Harry Winnard again crossed for a try, helped over in spectacular fashion by Ollie Hall.
Overall, our guys should be very proud of their performance today, the conditions were difficult, the opposition more so, but they did not falterand fought for every ball and every tackle. Well done.

U12 : vs Bromyard (A) Bromyard 14 - 7 Bredon Sun 22-Nov-2009 |
|
|
Bredon travelled away to Bromyard this week. The first half started strongly for Bredon. From the kick-off Bredon were much more aggressive and forthright in their play, picking up from where they left off against Cheltenham the week before. The early engages were very physical. Rucks and mauls were keenly contested. The tackles were solid and well timed. Bredon failed to let Bromyard start the game, and were soon camped deep inside their opponents half, where they stayed for much of the first half. Bromyard's defence was being severely tested. The forwards, led by Toby Marshall, mounted several attacks at Bromyard and the home side were forced into a number of scrambled clearances from behind their own try line. Bredon's backs were also keen to get in on the action. Returning fly half, Sam Darcey, led the line superbly, linking well with James Newey. With 10 minutes gone, neither side had managed to score, but it was Bredon who were looking more likely to. The Bredon pack was in fine form, despite a very obvious weight disadvantage. All Bredon's scrums were being easily won, and hooker Euan Archer was also winning nearly all Bromyards put-ins. The pack was driving Bromyard back at every scrum.
Bredon's first chance to score came from a scrum. Captain and scrum half Jake Carrolan broke from the base and linked well with the backs. Some excellent handling saw the ball along the line, finding its way to winger Tom Kenwright. With only 5 metres to go, Tom looked certain to score. However the Bromyard defence managed to bundle the winger and ball into touch inches from their own line. On several occassions Bredon were through the Bromyard line and the home side were forced to touch the ball down, giving the Bredon scrum chance to dominate much of the play. Another Bredon attack saw the forwards driving the Bromyard maul backwards. As the pressure mounted, the maul split and Nathan Branchett came through the middle, ball in hand, and was over the Bromyard try line. However, credit to the Bromyard defence, the home side managed to somehow keep the ball from being grounded. Another attack saw full back Olly Goodwin pick up a Bromyard clearance and return the ball deep into the opposition half with a blistering turn of pace.
Bredon finally manged to score with about 5 minutes of the first half remaining. The scorer was centre, James Newey, with a fine solo effort, managing to breach the Bromyard defence. Newey also successfully converted. From the resulting kick off, Bromyard charged straight back at Bredon. A play of about 5 phases saw them equalise with a try 2 minutes before half-time.
The second half saw Bredon go a try behind from the kick-off. Failing to deal with the kick-off properly saw the Bromyard No8 gather the ball and charge towards the line. Once into his stride, he wasn't going to be stopped, tearing through tackle after tackle to score. This was the only time Bredon missed their tackles in the whole game, and it was to cost them dearly. Throughout the remainder of the second half, Bromyard failed to get out of their own half for any length of time. Wave after wave of Bredon attack was launched against Bromyard, desperate to make amends for the conceded try. The forwards were rampant, attacking every ruck and maul. On several occassions, Bromyard's maul was driven backwards and they were very lucky to retain the put-in at the scrum. Not allowing themselves to get frustrated, the Bredon pack simply drove Bromyard off the ball and launched the backs on another attack. However, the backs were starting to feel the pressure to equalise too. Some uncharacteristic handling errors started to creep in. Passes were missed, off loads not made and the ball was knocked on, halting any momentum that had been gathering.
Not content with dominating the scrum, Bredon's forwards set about disrupting the Bromyard lineout, making clean ball impossible for the home side to win. Jack Dowdeswell was making a real nuisance of himself at the front of the lineout, as was Dom Heeks. Both were working well to make Bromyard's forwards feel the pressure. Along with the other forwards, they were relentless in their tackling, rucking and mauling. The last 5 minutes saw Bromyard deep in their own 22, being forced to kick clear again and again.
Despite a herculean effort, Bredon were unable to find a way through. But for a few dropped passes, a couple of knock-ons and several passes not being made in time, Bredon came away losing a game they should have won comfortably.
Man of the match Nathan Branchett. Moment of the match Jack Dowdeswell.

With just 8 players against a much larger Cheltenham squad, this game was always going to be difficult. Bredon started well with confident tagging and passing but Cheltenham soon scored a number of tries by using the full width of the pitch and running hard to the corners. William Pearce scored a fine solo try and at half time the score was Bredon 1 - Cheltenham 5.
The second half was a more even game as Bredon started to cover the width of the pitch stopping Cheltenham from running diagonally towards the corners. Further tries were scored by Joel Vanghi who ran strongly through the defense to score twice.

Well this was always going to be a difficult game. Cheltenham fielded a large squad of well drilled players making them very tough opposition. Bredons' hopes were dented even before the game started with a virus causing 6 key players to miss the match.
Bredon showed lots of courage and commitment and if the game was scored on a tackle count would have been worthy winners. They certainly held their own in territory, but it was out on the flanks that the speedy Cheltenham wingers did the damage. This was a plucky performance and it is worth mentioning that the Bredon scrum held its own and there was great support play throughout the team. Had the Squad had a few of the key impact players then Bredon would definitely have put points on the board.
Overall, a very hard trying performance, with Zane Careless leading from the front and notable contributions from Harry and Gregor. Against such strong and well resourced opposition this was a team effort with many positives.

U11 : vs Cheltenham (H) Bredon 21 - 7 Cheltenham Sun 15-Nov-2009 |

Fresh from the Cheltenham Festival the boys were eager make amends for their slow start against the same opposition last week.
Bredon opened brightly with some strong rucking and good swift passing by the backs. However Cheltenham, with a heavier pack, began to exert a sustained period of pressure and despite some spirited defence they finally went over in the corner for a converted try to lead 7-0 at half time. However Bredon kept their heads up and continued to ruck well and whenever the backs had the ball they looked dangerous.
Early in the second half the forwards won good ball and a break by Joss Edwards was well supported by Shea Danter who ran in to score Bredon’s opening try. Moments later the forwards again combined well and a good show and go by Joss allowed him to score Bredon’s second try. However Cheltenham continued to press with their bigger forwards making the hard yards and special mention must go to the tackling of the boys, led by Shea and Jules Hobbs, together with the excellent work in open play by Tom Hughes, who time and again was either first to the loose ball or was ripping the ball free from the opposition. Bredon’s third try came again from the good work of the pack as Tom again ripped the ball clear and popped it to Lewis McConnell who was rewarded for his support play as he crashed over to score. With all three tries successfully converted the final score was 21-7 to Bredon at the end of a terrific game of rugby. Well done to the forwards who played with great intensity and rucked skilfully, and to the backs who moved the ball well and ran hard and straight – a great win!

U12 : vs Cheltenham (H) Bredon 20 - 25 Cheltenham Sun 15-Nov-2009 |
|
|
Bredon welcomed Cheltenham to Westmancote this week. With a large visiting squad the decision was taken to play 3x15 minute periods to allow all players a good run out.
The game started evenly with both sides running the ball from the start. Bredon's scrum was working very well against bigger opponents with the early exchanges going in favour of the home side. But Cheltenham soon re-grouped and were quickly moving through their set pieces. The period ebbed and flowed with both sides failing to find a breakthrough. Then, with little more than a minute remaining, Cheltenham managed to score.
The second period was one of Cheltenham supremacy, managing to run in 3 tries without response. Bredon were slow to start the second period and the first 2 tries were relatively easy scores. Bredon did increase the work rate as the period progressed however. Despite being uncompetitive in the rucks and mauls, Bredon's forwards were tackling hard and the scrum was more than a match for Cheltenham. Euan Archer, Jack Dowdeswell and Toby Marshall were working hard to prevent the Cheltenham onslaught, ably assisted by George Avery. However it was Tom Kenwright, in only his 3rd game of competitive rugby, who was leading the defensive line, with several big and important tackles of his own, impressing teamates and coaches alike. Captain Jake Carrolan did his best to keep the team moving forward. Some characteristic solo breaks from the base of the scrum showed endeavour. But try as they might, Bredon failed to make big gains. George Barrel and James Newey both tried to break from the back line. Both were unsuccessful. Nathan Branchett had another scoring chance, collecting the ball from the back of a ruck. However, the Cheltenham defence was able to shepherd him towards the touchline, away from supporting players. Perhaps the best chance Bredon had to score came from a Cheltenham clearance kick. Ollie Goodwin collected the ball from deep inside the Bredon half. There then came a blistering show of pace from the fullback, managing to return the ball almost 40 metres, powering past the opposition. Sadly the move ultimately broke down, lack of support players being to blame.
The third period saw Bredon take to the field with some harsh words from the coaches ringing in their ears. To their credit, the players took these words as the galvanising force of a Bredon fight back. Challenged by the coaches to "show us you know how to ruck!", they did just that. The fightback was led by Dom Heeks. Battling illness he managed to charge through the Cheltenham line on several occasions, supported by the rest of the pack, and scored three times in the period. Every player lifted his game in this period. They were more aggressive at the breakdowns, rucking with a sense of purpose. The backs were more direct with their running. Passes were crisper and offloads in the tackle became easier. George Barrel also scored from a penalty move. Dan Robertshaw was popping up on both wings, creating a real attacking option. The game would have been a draw had it not been for a Cheltenham try, scored from their only attack of the period and the result of inexperience in defence; Bredon failing to ground the loose ball in the dead ball area which Cheltenham pounced on.
So it was so very nearly from the ashes re-born, but sadly not to be. A visible improvement in the space of only 30 minutes, with many positives to take from a battling performance.

U11 : Cheltenham Festival W3 D1 L1 Sun 08-Nov-2009 |
|
|
This year’s Cheltenham U11’s rugby festival took place on a miserable morning. The opening match against Cheltenham Tigers ‘A’ was played in wet and windy conditions and in a first half dominated by forward play the boys tackled well and held their own in the first half.
Two tries in the second half saw Cheltenham run out winners but Bredon put up a spirited display which carried over into the second pool match against Effingham & Leatherhead.
A good break by Joss Edwards ended with Tom Morrissey opening the scoring and with the boys showing a marked improving in their rucking from the first game, Bredon extended their lead in the second half. A great pass from Tom Hughes as he broke from the scrum allowed Will Lloyd to add a second. Brandon Coates then cut a great line from an attacking scrum and good passing put Alex Watkins in for Bredon’s third before Dylan Moss snaffled up a loose ball to seal a 4-0 victory.
Next up were Stourbridge and after a cold, wet and scoreless first half Kieran Brookes broke away from the half way line to touch down for the first try. With the last play of the game Matthew Dickens went over following a fine drive by the pack to make it 2-0 at the final whistle.
With the pool matches out of the way Bredon then faced Painswick. Dylan again ran a good line to open the scoring, and he followed up with a second in the corner moments later. The best try of the day came from a break by Jamie Blackler who then popped a perfect pass to the supporting Brandon Coates who crashed over to seal a 3-0 victory.
To the last game of the tournament and the boys were facing a well-drilled Droitwich team!! Bredon started this game with the same commitment as in previous games and both sides played some exciting rugby. Just before half time good play amongst the Droitwich backs saw them open the scoring. However the boys showed their mettle and five minutes after the restart the pack powered over to equalise. Despite extra time the teams couldn’t be separated and this exciting match ended in a fine 1-1 draw.
Well done boys!

U11 : vs Ledbury (H) Bredon 14 - 14 Ledbury Sun 01-Nov-2009 |
|
|
On a blustery morning Bredon kicked off against a powerful looking Ledbury team in a match to be played over four quarters, each of ten minutes, in order to give all the boys a run out.
Ledbury’s greater physicality was evident from the start and Bredon struggled both in the scrum and at the breakdown, but fine tackling from Shea Danter and Alex Watkins kept the score at 0-0 until the first break. However from the restart Ledbury immediately scored a converted try and this was quickly followed by a second as a succession of missed tackles allowed their backs to break through and make it 14-0 at half time.
However in the second half Bredon responded well and our superior fitness started to tell. A scoreless third quarter saw the boys starting to hold their own, the tackling was lower and hence more effective and we began to pass the ball much better. The result was a great blind side break by Shea Danter who converted his own try to make it 14-7. As the match reached the final minutes Bredon pressure continued to build and some ensuing defensive panic by Ledbury allowed Kieran Brookes to touch down a ball dropped in their own try zone by the opponents. A second conversion gave Bredon a deserved draw – a great effort but the boys still need to work on tackling lower and driving over to clear the ball out quicker at the ruck.

U12 : vs Ledbury (H) Bredon 0 - 42 Ledbury Sun 01-Nov-2009 |
|
|
Bredon hosted Ledbury's 'A' team at Westmancote. With a squad of 40 players to choose from, Ledbury ensured they brought their best team available with them. From the kick off, Bredon were immediately put under pressure, but they are a resilient team, bonded over the last two seasons, and stuck to the task in hand doggedly. Despite the sheer size and power of the Ledbury pack, Bredon were more than a match for them in the early exchanges. Moving forward from last weeks game, the scrum was again Bredon's best weapon. The backs were making the most of what ball they did get and were keen to run the ball from wherever they were on the pitch; Sam Darcey and James Newey linking well. Geaorge Barrel was also keen to get his hands on the ball, and linked well with winger Dan Robertshaw on a number of attacks. However, Ledbury were well drilled in both attack and defence, and after 15 minutes of the first 20, neither side had managed to score. The first try was scored after a penalty was awarded to Ledbury; a powerful run and a missed tackle set them up for a relatively easy score. After that, Ledbury were quick to capitalise, scoring another 3 tries in as many minutes, leaving the Buzards shell shocked to have fallen so far behind so quickly.
The second half was again a very even encounter to start with. Bredon made the most of their ability to out scrummage their bigger opponents, whilst the backs launched wave after wave of attacks at Ledbury. Unfortunately, the pressure of not scoring was beginning to tell, and a few unforced handling errors began creeping in on a very blustery day. Bredon were much more competitive in the rucks and mauls this week. On several occassions, Dom Heeks and Jack Dowdeswell made bursting drives through and the pack managed to drive Ledbury backwards. Nathan Branchett was unlucky not to score from such a move, being forced into touch inches from the visitors line. However Ledbury were able to soak up the pressure and bide their time. When the opportunity arose, they were able to break away and score. They scored twice in the second half, managing to finish off the only 2 real chances they had in the seond half. Final score Bredon 0 - 42 Ledbury.
A thoroughly well deserved victory for the visitors, and Bredons first defeat for over 12 months. Despite the score line, Bredon aquitted themselves admirably and have many positives to take on to their next match against Bromyard on 15th November.

Bredon started the match very confidently with only 7 players against a larger Bromsgrove squad of 12. Confident and effective tagging and good passing lead to two excellent first half tries by Joel Vanghi and Stanley Simpson. At half time the score was 2 - 2. After half time Bromsgrove introduced their substitutes and their fresh legs lead to a further 5 tries. During the last few minutes of the game Bredon strung together a series of passes resulting in a fine try by Harry Cox. Final score: Bredon Buzzards 3 - Bromsgrove 7

U11 : vs Bromsgrove (H) Bredon 24 - 12 Bromsgrove Sun 25-Oct-2009 |
|
|
Although they were two players short (thanks go to our four boys who played a half each for them), Bromsgrove were physically a very big team and proved more than a match for our pack in the scrums. However Bredon were more mobile and good early pressure in the loose allowed Will Baradell Black to crash over and open the scoring.
The backs then cut loose for Dylan Moss to score and he added a second after collecting a loose ball and touching down in the corner to give a half time score of 17-0.
Bredon started the second half strongly and Shea Danter, who had attacked at pace all game, broke free to make the game safe. With Bredon ringing the changes in the second half the game became a little scrappy. Too many players from both sides were taking the tackle instead of drawing the man and offloading. The main highlight of the half was a great break three quarters of the length of the field by Brandon Coates which Bromsgrove just managed to defend before they themselves scored a couple of consolation tries chasing down long kicks.
Conversions for Bredon were by Joss Edwards and Alex Watkins to give a final score of 24-12

U12 : vs Bromsgrove (H) Bredon 35 - 0 Bromsgrove Sun 25-Oct-2009 |

|
Bredon Buzzards welcomed Bromsgrove this week. Bromsgrove brought with them a large squad and the decision was taken to play 3 x15 minute 'halves' in order to give all players a good run. Play was barely under way when George Barrel went over for Bredon's first try, taking the visitors by surprise. The game quickly settled into a pattern of domination by Bredon's forwards in the scrum. Almost all the scrums were being won by the Bredon pack with stand-in scrum-half Dan Robertshaw able to provide the backs with continual good ball, allowing them to run at Bromsgrove from anywhere on the pitch with James Newey, and man of the match Sam Darcey, leading the attack. A second try was soon scored; George Barrel with a fine solo effort.
The second period saw Bromsgrove steady the pace of the game and hold their own in open play, at times giving the Bredon forwards a lesson in rucking and mauling, but Bredon stuck to the task in hand. The scrum was rampant and, at times, penalised for driving Bromsgrove back further than the permitted 1.5 metres. Together with some good line-out balls, the backs were able to keep the pressure on Bromsgrove. However they were unable to breach their defence which was tackling hard and holding firm. Bredon's defence was also tested by Bromsgrove on a number of occasions, but the hard work on the training pitch was evident, with some excellent tackling from both forwards and backs.
The third period started much the same as the second period ended, with both sides working the ball out wide but failing to breach stubborn defences. Bredon's forwards maintained their dominance of the scrum and were working well as a unit, securing good possession for the backs. They in turn were showing some excellent ball handling skills and George Barrel was again on hand to score his third try, following a sustained Bredon attack. Bredon's fourth try was the result of a kick through, which Bromsgrove failed to deal with, and the free ball was touched down by Ollie Goodwin.
In only his second game, Tom Kenwright was unlucky not to score a debut try, electing to pass when he was only inches from the try line. However, the final try of the game was scored by forward George Avery, following up on another loose ball in the Bromsgrove dead ball area. All tries were successfully converted by James Newey. Final score Bredon 35 - 0 Bromsgrove.
Next game is 1st November against Ledbury at Westmancote. Players are always welcome to add strength in depth.

Match 1 v Old Leamingtonians
W 5-0
After the warm up matches against Evesham last week this festival always going to be a much tougher challenge for the boys and so it proved from the outset. On very short pitches (with slightly confusing markings!) the boys struggled in the beginning to cope with the superior rucking and scrummaging of Old Leamingtonians.
Too many handling errors, coupled with a lack of support for the man with the ball, meant Bredon were on the back foot. However when the ball was finally released into space, Joss Edwards ran clear to score before half time. The second half was a scrappy affair, with Old Leamingtonians applying most of the pressure but the boys defended stoutly to hang on for the win.
Match 2 v Worcester
D 0-0
Another frustrating game, with a slippery ball and wet conditions making it difficult for the boys to control their passing. Again too many of the forwards stood off at the rucks allowing Worcester to drive us off balls we should have won. With neither team able to force an opening, the match petered out in a scoreless draw.
Match 3 v Droitwich
L 0-30
After the first two matches the writing was on the wall against Droitwich, but maybe the boys will have learnt an important lesson – we need to have control of the ball if we want to win! Droitwich comprehensively outplayed us in the scrums and in the loose, and again we were guilty of not competing for the ball at the breakdown. A mistake from a kicked Droitwich clearance gave them an early first try and missed tackles and sloppy handling contributed to a 0-15 half time score. With heads dropping the second half was no better. With too many forwards standing off and too many errors by the backs, Droitwich ran out worthy winners 0-30.
Match 4 v Kidderminster
W 10-0
After the Droitwich match the boys put in a much improved performance against Kidderminster. Much greater application and effort were rewarded by a fine break and try from Dylan Moss to give a 5-0 half time lead. This improvement continued into the second half and Harry Low did well to chase down a kick ahead and touch down in the corner to give a final score of 10-0. A much better effort boys!
Match 5 v Malvern
W 25-0
The last game of the festival and Bredon showed much more of the desire we saw last season. Despite having lost Will Lloyd and Lewis McConnell earlier in the tournament through injury, the forwards competing more aggressively and their efforts led to the opening try for Matthew Dickens. A break by Shea Danter and great run by Jamie Blackner put Matthew in again to cement the lead by half time. From the restart a good catch and break by Joss Edwards was well supported by Kieran Brookes who made it 15-0. Matthew Dickens then got a third from a charged down kick before Shea Danter completed the scoring with a blind side break from an attacking scrum.
There is a lot for the boys to work on to reach the levels of last season, but they can look forward with the knowledge that they finished strongly and will improve as the season progresses.

Today the under 10's played their first matches of the season against Evesham.
First Match - Bredon 9 tries Evesham nil tries. Captain for the match was Zane Careless. Try scorers for Bredon - Edward Petts (5), Harry Winnard (2), Harry Mattock, Seb Keys.
Good performance all round with the scrum dominant throughout the game. The Bredon game plan of rucking and mauling before passing out to the backs worked well. Defence was excellent with Evesham getting close to the Bredon try line only on 1 occasion and was a credit to the team that they did not concede a try. Second Match - Bredon 5 tries Evesham 4 tries. Captain for the match was George Elliott. Try scorers for Bredon - George Wheldon, Tom Broome (2), Edward Petts (2).
A great performance from this team as 4 players have only started playing this season. Great passing out of the tackle and good support play ensured the team won this match. It was far more competitive this game but very encouraging to see the new players doing so well.

This was the first match ever for most of the U7's and their excitement was clear to see. Our squad of 8 played extremely well against an Evesham squad of 16. Bredon got their season off to a winning start this week at Westmancote against a very tough Evesham side. Bredon made the most of some early possession and scored first. A good move from the backs was finished off spectacularly by Ollie Goodwin, who dived into the corner to score. Evesham responded straight away with a try of their own. The match then settled down into a very tight struggle with both packs putting in some dogged work to win the ball for their backs. Bredons' backs were soon into their stride again. A breakdown ball was picked up by Sam Graves who supplied a wonderful pass to the backs. They combined well to release Ollie Goodwin for his second try. The forwards continued their pressure at the breakdown, competing well and winning some good scrummages. With a regular supply of good ball from scrum half and captain Jake Carolan, the backs finished the first half with a try from James Newey.
The second half was a much tougher affair. Both packs were well into their stride now and the tackles were getting more ferocious. Bredon were first to score; another fine move from the backs allowed Sam Darcey to cut through and score. All of Bredons' tries had been successfully converted by James Newey. Evesham again hit back straight away with a try of their own; a missed tackle allowing them to score. The next 10 minutes saw a very determined Evesham push for another try. They were repeatedly held up by a resilient Bredon defence, led by Dom Heeks. He made several vital try saving tackles to deny Evesham just short of the line. Bredons' scrum was also proving a very powerful weapon. A couple of scrums won against the head by Euan Archer allowed Bredon to stem the tide of pressure. Some fine work around the breakdowns from Nathan Branchett and Toby Marshall allowed Bredon to pull themselves back into the match.
Two debutants for Bredon aquitted themselves admirably in the match; Jack Cummerford and Tom Kenwright. Both players were new to the team and more players are always welcome to strengthen the squad for a long season ahead.

U11 : vs Evesham (H) Bredon 40 - 0 Evesham Sun 04-Oct-2009 |

With the ground being so hard, the first fixture of the season was used by both teams as a training match for the respective squads, allowing all the boys to get a taste of the action over three games. In Match 1 Bredon started strongly but Evesham defended well until Will Lloyd went over for the only try of the game, converted by Shea Danter to give a final score line of 7-0.
The second match saw Bredon again exerting good pressure through the forwards which in turn provided a good platform for the backs to attack. Kieran Brookes opened the scoring before Matt Dickens, helped by the pack, scored a second. The win was completed when Alex Watkins fed Matt Dickens again who ran clear to score. Conversions by Dickens, Watkins and Cox made the final score 21-0.
As the squad was rotated for the final game, Bredon again ran out winners, despite conceding too many penalties, as Will Lloyd and Shea Danter both scored and Tom Hughes added a conversion to finish 12-0 winners.
